Sharing Files for Series

Could we have a separate page on a series where tutors can share all of their resources? Instead of dropping links after each session in the group chat, they could a separate page where they can share and organize all of their resources (a locker for files).

An idea that came out of a conversation with some tutors today: what if we had a "Resources" page like this, which was simply a Google Doc that a tutor could write in, link to other pages, etc. It could be editable only by the tutor, although they could link to other docs that the learners could also edit, etc.

Drawing inspiration from Slack, will it help to add an upload file feature to the group chat? Not right away, but sometime later down the road? Like screenshare on Zoom, this could be limited to the host-tutor first, who can manually enable sharing for learners if necessary. I can definitely see how helpful file sharing will be for academic series, and almost certainly for the amazing SAT Bootcamps!

Drew's Resources page idea is fantastic, but instead of a doc, can it be a tab on the series menu? And is this resource portal best added to series or classroom? I don't have the answer yet, but it's helpful to see the impact for resources tab in classroom vs series menu.

It would be great if we could upload documents (warm-up handout, lecture notes, resources etc) for students prior to a session

I agree. Currently, I think that a way of getting around it is by sharing a google docs publicly (so you don't collect students' emails) and post the link on the session description

This page might also allow tutors to post video recordings of themselves explaining concepts (ie their own Khan Academy style videos), in addition to slides and notes.

It would be great to a have a resource Point where tutors can attach necessary docs, ppts etc for the learners to refer.

There's one catch through in the long term.
Tutors often share files that they have taken from some other site or some files that aren't publicly available for explaining (Like, why not). And if we make those files/links public as a site, then google and other search engines will index that and associate it with schoolhouse's site. We can't add
rel=nofollow
argument in every file/link; We want search engines to index our site.Drew Bent

Drew Bent: That's not a bad idea. I was thinking of more like linking a google drive folder so that learners that could quickly access any file in that folder. However, I think your idea is better because you could easily link both google drive files and links other websites (e.g. quizlet, kahoot, etc.). I like this, seems promising.

Anonymously share files!

Sometimes learners or tutors unknowingly giveaway their email id(even though they didn't meant to) when sharing files with google drive. So there is a great alternative to it, a website called as ''WeTransfer'' https://wetransfer.com/ let's you share the file via direct download link.File sharing upto 2gb is allowed! It also has cool UI!

Interesting idea, Nicholas L. What things are you trying to do where dropping in links wouldn't work? Or what do you (and others) think the value would be for having a more centralized page for sharing files like this? Just trying to figure out the underlying motivation or issue here.
Nicholas L
Drew Bent: I think having a centralized page is just better than a long feed of links mixed with other announcements in the group chat. It would just be more convenient and better organized. I think this could just be an improvement, its not necessarily an issue.

Drew Bent: If students have a question about something during a series sessions that others would benefit from, being able to reference back to any visuals or lesson materials presented throughout the series would be helpful. Plus, if the tutor created a diagram or something that learners want a few weeks later, it would be easier to find. Especially if they were in one place, learners could come back and look at things (similar to an online class, find materials from session 1 under an area labeled "session 1" in the separate resources page).
Plus, when students miss sessions it's more convenient to have everything in one place for folks to find and make sure they're caught up.

Drew Bent: I know for me, personally, links aren’t very friendly at schoolhouse and sharing images, data, quizlets, google forms links, etc. becomes a headache to constantly copy and paste so I created a google document of every link that my learners need for the series as I create them so they can find it.
If we made a feature to share files specifically we wouldn’t have to upload them to google drive (images, pdfs, powerpoints, etc. which aren’t “native” google files) and then create a shareable link or publish to the web so that viewers can’t see PI. It’s just a lot of extra steps.

Drew Bent: I think an announcements page for a series would be beneficial. Tutors can send links to resources and files, or post updates. It will be more organized than messages in a group chat.

Drew Bent: Would Coda.io repository of resources collaboratively edited by learners and tutors work? There, people could gather their favorite resources/prompts/topics with feedback. The students could also request peer groups centered around a resource or post a link to a session on the topic if already planned. Also, for series, there could be a place for pseudonymous "homework" on places such as Write.as, Scratch Studios, or Edublogs. It could also serve the outside population. I am up to maintaining such a coda doc if there is a demand.
Drew Bent
Stanislava S: Something like that could be interesting. Thanks for all the ideas! We do have a Google Drive for the tutors where they currently can share resources among each other. Mariah Olson can share more (or you can message her in the tutor slack).
