Users can privately message other users. I don't know if this is already added. But I think it would be cool if they could do this with other users, not just tutors.

Allow learners to message tutors

Only tutors have the option to DM tutors on SHW; could we open this up to learners as well? Then, learners could request a sessions from a specific tutor, or ask about something they weren't sure of from a previous session of that tutor's.
This also related to the following post (https://schoolhouse.world/feedback/p/show-which-topics-a-tutor-is-certified-in), where when learners request a session, it would be helpful to show which topics a tutor is certified in.

Allow Tutors to Message Learners

I've had an experience where I'm tutoring a learner on a series without them making a session request, I go on vacation for a few days, I see they've sent me a text regarding when the next session would be, but was unable to respond because the tutor-learner chat gets closed after a few days and cannot be re-opened. It would be great if tutors could open chat rooms with learners; thanks!

i think that you should be able to chat with a tutor even tho you have not attended to a session, because i have been having trouble connecting tutors just because i haven't been to one of there sessions

Specific Requests for Tutor

I saw someone had an idea to search for specific tutors, along those lines, what if there was an option to go to a tutor profile and request a session from them? Not sure if that follows safety guidelines and stuff but I noticed a few requests for specific tutors so it would make the process easier.

Allow learners to request a specific tutor in their session request

Some learners would prefer having a tutor that they've established a strong relationship with, rather than someone new. They may have also joined a random session of the tutor, liked it, and wanted to request another session on the same topic with the tutor.
Right now, the best thing we have is if a learner really wants a specific tutor, they mention their name in the request and another tutor scrolling by notifies the requested tutor on Slack. While this sometimes works, there are no doubt a lot of requests that are missed.
If we could have a final option when you're requesting a session saying something like "Is there a specific tutor you'd like to request? If not, select 'No preference'." would work. The tutor would then get a notification/have the session request pop-up in their "Messages" area.
This also ties into two other posts (https://schoolhouse.world/feedback/p/specific-requests-for-tutor, https://schoolhouse.world/feedback/p/allow-learners-to-message-tutors) about session requests and letting learners and tutors have contact.

Thanks, Athena. Let's revisit this now, especially since the post re: learners messaging tutors has 28 votes. Will merge these posts together.

I really like this idea because in one of my sessions, a learner asked if they could chat with me if they need me to host a session! The learner was really hard-working and was very engaged in the session. So, it would be great if this feature was added and they could come to my future sessions!

This is a great idea. I had a learner who constantly attended my non-series sessions on Korean, but I lost contact with him when I stopped teaching Korean for a while. He was a very hardworking student, so that was a bummer. Being able to DM students would be a fabulous idea for tutors and learners to keep in touch.

Right now, learners can DM tutors that host their series. Just wondering, do y'all think there's any downside to letting any learner message any tutor? For example, that might lead to a lot more 1:1 help in chat, etc. that might make detract from our small-group session and series offerings. I don't have a good answer here.

Akshay Ravikumar: I think if a learner is just overall more familiar with a certain tutor's teaching style, they might appreciate the option to chat with them, so in my opinion, if they get 1:1 help, it's like an added benefit. Plus who knows, tutors might get more learners in different sessions as a result of the private chats. In addition, we could make it clear to both learners and tutors that the chat isn't just a free-for-all DM sort of thing if that makes sense. Generally, I think there are ways to address the drawbacks that might pop-up from this idea.

I think this is going to be very helpful to both tutors and learners who are just attending a session and not a series.
