Let’s Keep It Inclusive: A Proposal to Inform Session Creators!
Kathryn S
Fellow tutors, we can all agree that we loved the impact of 1‑on‑1 tutoring! After the pilot ended, the growing number of single‑learner sessions even after the pilot has ended is not only as a result of pure unawareness but also leaving many students out—time for a gentle reminder. As a dedicated tutor within our vibrant Schoolhouse community, I've observed a significant trend: an increasing number of sessions are still being created for just one learner, even after the pilot phase has concluded. Our exceptional User Support team has also highlighted a marked uptick in this activity since the beginning of the academic year.
In light of this, I’d like to propose a solution that could greatly enhance our collective experience. You may be familiar with the safety flags that notify Schoolhouse members—tutors, learners, and others—requiring them to acknowledge understanding by typing "I understand" before exiting. I believe implementing a similar notification system universally could serve as an effective means to inform users about the recent changes. This initiative would not only raise awareness among those who may be unaware but also alleviate some of the pressures on our diligent moderating team.
I sincerely hope you’ll consider this idea, and I would be grateful for any recognition of my role in getting it started. Let’s work hand in hand to ensure our community thrives.

I agree that there is a problem with people continuing to schedule 1-on-1 sessions, which is against policy and creates confusion for both tutors and learners. I've had some discussions with James on this topic, specifically about such sessions being listed in weekly Schoolhouse Bulletin emails, seemingly sanctioning such sessions. Some users may be unaware the 1-on-1 pilot ended, but I think there's another set of users that never knew the pilot existed at all, nor that 1-on-1 sessions are disallowed. I personally favor a solution that is tied directly into the session creation process, rather than a one-time broadcast to all users (a one-time broadcast could have been helpful once the pilot ended but it doesn't help those that join the platform after the broadcast). E.g. one option would be to parse the session Title in the session creation wizard for keywords like "1-on-1", "1:1", "1 on 1", etc., with the form field becoming invalid upon the presence of any of those words in the session title, with an error message displayed with a link to the policy in question. Or an always present warning message could be displayed below the Max Learners dropdown, with the link taking you to https://intercom.schoolhouse.world/en/articles/9959475-can-i-plan-a-session-with-only-one-learner (I personally favor this option, as it'd be hard to automatically identify a title like "Session for Bill" as problematic). I'm not aware of a non-engineering solution to this problem (and what I'm proposing doesn't fully avoid the possibility of such sessions being scheduled, it just hopefully reduces their frequency). For the time being, manually reporting such sessions I assume is the right course of action, though I do hope some product solution (either Kathryn's original proposal, or what I'm suggesting, or something else) gets implemented.
Edit - James suggested I submit this idea as a feedback request, so I've just put it in https://schoolhouse.world/feedback/p/clarify-1-on-1-sessions-are-disallowed-when-creating-sessions

Hi Kathryn! Although I do think this is a great idea, it might be complicated to implement for the time being :( engineering would most likely have to push something since Coaches wouldn't be able to send that many admin messages manually (I'm a Coach, for context :D). It would definitely be a good idea to keep this here, but might you have any ideas of what we could do in the short term? Again, amazing ideas!

Maia S As a coder, i think this wouldn't be very hard to implement! (compared to other implementations SchoolHouse has made in a day)
