Artificial Intelligence or Alien Intelligence? as some people say. Quite Polarising!
SALIL P
Hello SchoolHouse,
SchoolHouse is an incredible place for intellectual learning, peer to peer tutoring. Ever since I came here it has helped me immensely and still continues to help me and many more here. Due to the goodness of this place which I want it to improve and be kept intact, made me write this message, for which I might even get banned for writing this message.
A new feature named A.I companion and other A.I features have been integrated into schoolhouse from a couple of weeks. I appreciate every kind of good technology and welcome them whole-heartedly. But, it might sound very weird and surprising in this era that I'm an Anti-A.I Guy. I loathe A.I to its very core. There are many reasons for me to be an Anti-A.I, as it all started since its unprecedented growth. Mentioning even some of its not so good side here is not feasible to write here, rather some articles, books, websites, etc give an insight to its not so good side. There is a book named Nexus: by Yuval Noah Harari that came in September 2024, and this book echos my beliefs and sentiments that bolstered my Anti-A.I ness. Even the summary of this book, and interviews with the author, by many reputed news agencies like CNN, The Guardian, NYTimes, etc can give a brief insight into this world.
So, I wanted to ask, if I ask the host to turn off A.I in zoom meetings, would it be legal according SchoolHouse laws? And when I become a tutor, unfortunately or fortunately A.I would be turn off completely, if I can? And also A.I is being used in SchoolHouse to various jobs like in auto-moderator, reporting, maintaining policies, etc, but can it be turned off? Or even if not turned off, how much credibility I can have for its regulations?
I know A.I is being integrated for the betterment of the community, but anything that is A.I makes me feel threatened, as, A.I is completely blocked in my life. I have blocked all types of A.I that can be blocked apart some experimental A.I's like one used by Google in search, which unfortunately I can't disable. But, since A.I. is being used here for educational purposes I see a very narrow chance of having the option to enable or disable it here, yet if anything that can be done to make a SchoolHouse members comfortable would be appreciated. Even if that means no blocking but strict regulations of its working.
I know it's just me writing this, but if some other people from schoolhouse too echo this and bring this into limelight then it might be good for our amazing community.
Thanks and Regards,
SALIL P

Just to throw it out there, we are actually hosting a couple of Dialogue events on AI this week! Registration is still open for the session this weekend: https://coda.io/d/_dXU2-F-xKRr/Dialogue-Events_suDrnOKQ
I know this doesn't address your questions and concerns about how Schoolhouse implements AI on the platform, but I thought you might be interested in participating in Dialogues given your views on the topic. I'm sure others would love to discuss and learn from you!
SALIL P
Hey, Kelly M that's amazing, and I really-highly appreciate your reply to this article, but there are two issues. First the times, when converted into IST they're way past midnight. And second, that right now I'm in middle of a very important thing i.e A-Level exams. So, due to which doing anything apart from exam is not feasible right now. I'd love to do such things, and I want to. But, as you see from these two reasons I really can't do it due to current circumstances.
After, I get freed up from a variety of things, along with the desired result(fingers crossed) that'd be in a couple of months, I guess I'm gonna comeback to do all the things I'd love to do, as this great platform SchoolHouse provides to many, Lovely!
SALIL P
Kelly M, I'd do such things in the near future! I hope! Which is by the start of the Indian Summer

Hey Salil, you'll never get banned for sharing feedback or ideas through official channels. You are entitled to have your opinions about AI and your feelings are valid but here at Schoolhouse, we believe in leveraging AI as a tool to not only enhance our operational efficiency but to also help our community focus on what's most important -- learning & growing together.
As a tutor, I believe you can turn off the AI Companion in your Zoom session by clicking the "AI Companion" button and then clicking "Turn off". Our back-end systems that leverage AI (such as our auto-moderator) will continue to operate as such and we plan to continue to build systems, particularly those that can help us become a more sustainable organization, with AI. If it's any consolation, we still manually review many things (such as safety reports) sensitive in nature and are dedicated to ensuring a reasonable & thoughtful balance between AI & human-ran systems here at Schoolhouse.
SALIL P
James O'Brien Yeah, I won't get banned, thanks for that. I do understand on the usage of A.I here, as the whole world does. Thanks for telling the the A.I companion of Zoom can be turned off, and actually I've been asking the tutor( in whose session I'd be in) to turn it off and thankfully they're turning it off.
But, along with everything written earlier, these questions are still unanswered: 'And also A.I is being used in SchoolHouse to various jobs like in bots, auto-moderator, reporting, maintaining policies, etc, but, can it be turned off? Or even if not turned off, how much credibility and assurance I can have for its regulations?'
James O'Brien
SALIL P, as I mentioned our back-end systems that leverage AI (such as our auto-moderator) will continue to operate as such -- this, and other systems using AI at Schoolhouse, will not be turned off.
And I'm not sure what you mean by credibility & assurance for its regulation. As I mentioned before, we still manually review many things that are sensitive in nature and anyone who interacts with a system supported by AI that feels an action was wrong can reach out to User Support.
SALIL P
James O'Brien Yeah, I can totally understand on why it can't be turned off, or even lower its usage. By those questions I meant that; could you give or show regulatory policies implemented here on the usage of A.I . For instance(off topic though), regulatory policy on taxation, or on wages, or on safety, etc.

James O'Brien There are so many articles that finding the specific one is difficult. I Thank you very much for sharing this! Have a great day! I guess you're in the U.S. Cheers!
