Advanced and Competition Math Subworld
Jose Roberto Cossich G
As Schoolhouse has grown, the demand for subjects beyond the standard curriculum have grown. Increasingly, I think we've all seen the demand for math competition sessions as well as college-level math sessions. By that I mean sessions for students interested in taking the
- AMC
- AIME
- Mathcounts
- Math Quizbowls or Olympiads
or challenging post AP Calc BC subjects such as
- Number Theory
- Calculus 3
- Proof-based calculus
- Linear Algebra
- Abstract Algebra
and more. This is a continuation of the vastly popular previous petition (https://schoolhouse.world/feedback/p/history-and-advanced-math), which did in fact lead to a history subworld, but not yet a math one. Given Schoolhouse's historic focus on math, a subworld dedicated to those challenging themselves beyond the usual common core is the natural next step.

So, this would basically replace the "Even More Math" topic in Enrichment with its own real subworld, right?
Kush R
proof based calc series would go hard.. wanted to do one but idt there was much interest

Could it be for competitions other than math as well, I think physics also deserves it's own because most of the physics subworld is focused on AP Physics Curriculum
Jose Roberto Cossich G
Shubhankar D So the reason we're restricting it to math is because there's already another group of people (the channel #academic competitions on Slack) who are advocating for competitions.
Jose Roberto Cossich G
Alright, so based off the overwhelming feedback it seems that it would be best to have advanced math as a separate subworld rather than an advanced math + competition subworld! So this petition is strictly for advanced math now :)

Thanks for sharing this, Jose. Here's some additional information (https://schoolhouse.world/faq/en/article/what-subworlds-will-be-created-next-lchts5/) about how we select subworlds to launch. Please note that the post you linked was not the only factor we considered when we added our latest subworlds, R&W & History. We won't be launching any additional subworlds this summer but we encourage anyone who wants to host advanced mathematics or competition math to do so in Enrichment.

Yes! I also agree that there should be an advanced math sub world particularly covering college level math courses especially with the increasing number of tutors and learners on schoolhouse who are in college

Hello Jose, just saw your post. I definitely support this idea, although I am not sure how we can certify for these advanced courses. - Justin

I suggest possibly another way of approaching this: have a separate Advanced Math subworld and a STEM Competition subworld. The main focus of the STEM Competition subworld should be niche topics and competition strategies, and meanwhile the main focus of the Advanced Math subworld should be higher topics of math (e.g. linear and abstract algebra, discrete math, mathematical analysis—proof based if applicable) treated as academic subjects.

In terms of certifications, AMC/AIME scores could be used as honorary certifications and Khan Academy already has Unit Tests and a Course Challenge for Multivariable Calculus. For other subjects, we could start by allowing honorary certifications (based off transcripts) for those who have taken classes in the subjects they teach.

Hello! Are you aware of #academic-competitions?
Aarav T
I think this is super close to that so I personally feel instead of having them together:
1 Subworld for General Academic Competitions
1 Subworld for Advanced Math
Aarav T
Jose Roberto Cossich G That is great! We have been doing a lot more! We have been doing a lot of research and got 150 slack channel members. Through some painstakingly hard research we determined around (historically) 3000 learners and around 150 tutors. We are working on hosting more sessions and drafting up a proposal for a competition subworld!
Aarav T
Jose Roberto Cossich G Ya that might work. Alternative:
Since the demand is so high for academic competitions (not just math competitions) it might be a case where we do an academic competition subworld (since it so much broader than an advanced math subworld or a math contest subworld)
